House of Thol | Scape Mirror

Although getting Waterworks out there in stores in Netherlands (and beyond) is one of our main focal points at the moment, we're working hard on new products behind the scenes.
Our collaboration with Pols Potten for example (click), and a lovely project that's all about porcelain (we'll post some of the material experiments soon).

For all of you who've  been following us on Instagram and other social media: you might have seen sneak peaks of this new product pass by in the last weeks:

Let me start at the beginning, we featured the photographs by Italian landscape photographer Franco Fontana on our other blog a while ago, and suddenly an old design-idea resurfaced and clicked right into place: a layered mirror for the hallway.

We decided to not waste any more time and went for it: It took us little time to finish the initial design of our hallway mirror and start building the prototype.

Our goal was to create a simple yet playful mirror, slightly inspired by Franco Fontana's architectural photographs.
A mirror for the hallway that wouldn't take up too much space, but would still have room for the occasional letter and set of keys.

As you can see, the three separate mirrors are stacked on top of each other, creating a subtle layered reflection and adding to the city-scape-like appearance.
And we're naming it: the Scape Mirror.

This first Scape mirror is still a prototype, but we're already looking into (small-scale) production possibilities.

Waterworks is officially launched!! Yes!!

Here's a little impression of our party last Saturday.
None of the photographs are by us, since we were simply too busy and forgot all about taking pictures. Luckily everyone has a cameraphone nowadays...

A lot of people came to the party to toast with us on the successful Waterworks-launch and for a moment we were even afraid the studio wouldn't be big enough.

The story of the cone | part II

Remember we had to set up our own terracotta production line (click)?

Well, it's up and running now!
It takes a lot of work and involves a lot of going back to the studio at night to prepare batches for firing, but so far all is going pretty well and we're close to the number we need to cover the first orders.

That said, we're still looking for a production facility for future batches, and we're hoping to have more news about that within the next couple of months.
Meanwhile, a couple of snapshots of the cones in the kiln, before and after firing, and (above) the first boxes full of finished cones.

Finally!
From May 1st onward we're officially moving the House of Thol studio to classroom 6 in the old Mariaschool in Zandvoort. (old as in dating from the early 20th century)
Updated address-information will follow soon, but let me tell you: it's a lot closer to home.
Did i say a lot closer? I mean: from 45-minute drive to 4-minute walk.
Imagine all the time we'll have!

Luckily the municipality (who owns the school) was kind enough to give us the key to our new abode two weeks early to fix the place up, which means we've been spending the last 10 days doing just that:
We took down the immensely large cotton sheets hanging from the ceiling (not sure why they were there in the first place); steamed off all the wallpaper (painting over it was no option) to have it reveal pitch black walls, filled gazillion holes in the walls, and are now in the process of painting everything white.

This is all pretty straightforward stuff, except for the fact that the walls are over 4,5 meters tall, which makes painting them (and the ceiling) rather... challenging.

We should get back to it, really...

Kit's first run

We're beyond excited about the latest addition to our studio inventory: our brand new Ultimaker 2 3d-printer, a.k.a. Kit!
Here he is on one of his first runs, printing out the House of Thol logo:

Two very very happy people were watching that logo grow!

Since i know we're a generation of people who have problems with attention span, i sped up the video a bit (4x) so you can all witness the magic of Kit's efforts without getting bored.
And watch it again.
And again.
And again...

This will not be the last you're seeing from Kit!

What we've been up to lately

It's already a month-and-a-half ago that we succesfully concluded our crowdfund-campaign to finance the production of WATERWORKS.
My, time sure knows how to fly!

Over the last weeks we've been re-establishing contacts with several manufacturers up to a point where we now found two factories that we think are quite promising when it comes to level of craftsmanship, communication and efficiency.
At the moment we're eagerly awaiting the arrival of the first samples that were made. We've already seen some pictures of the pieces that we're quite excited about, and can't wait to have the samples in our hands.

These are exciting times!
We'll keep you posted on the arrival of the samples.

We're looking for an intern!

These are exciting times for House of Thol: not only are we busy with the production of WATERWORKS, we have several other projects to work on and loads of opportunities to explore. That's why we're looking for an intern.

This is the chance for a motivated and talented student to work in a versatile environment and build up experience in product design and the use of a wide range of materials and techniques as well as get insight in what it's like to run a small-scale design studio.
